How do we determine what skin tone you have?
One of the questions I get asked the most is “Is your laser suitable for Asian or black skin?” and the answer is simply “YES!”. Infact you’ll be pleased to know that my laser is very effective on all darker skin tones!
This question stems from the fact that dark olive, very tanned or black skin tones were a big no go in the laser industry a few years ago. However, technology has changed and now nearly everyone can have laser safely. At the Laser Lounge Media City, we use a laser diode which uses a more concentrated beam of light that goes directly into the skin. IPL or intense pulsed light cannot be used on darker skin tones and this until recently was the only form of machine available.
Skin types 5 and 6 are the ones that cannot be treated safely with IPL and can only have laser. This is because the light from the device is attracted to pigment and it cannot differentiate between the skin pigment and the hair pigment. So, in turn this then heats the skin and the hair up causing superficial burns.
However, men and women with dark skin are great candidates for laser hair removal as long as the right type of laser is used.
At the Laser Lounge Media City we ALWAYS patch test and I cannot stress how important it is for everyone to have one. It just gives us a little idea of how your skin will react to the treatment. If you have an adverse reaction in a small and inconspicuous area you will be much less upset than if you had one or your face.
Be safe and not sorry. Use a qualified practitioner and always have a patch test.
